Details Details Close Description This original ink drawing comes from a collection of miniature sketches we found in the Paris flea markets by satirical caricaturist Charles Amedee de Noe aka CHAM (1818-1879). These pieces served as preparatory drawings for the newspapers and magazines they were to be published in. When a sketch was selected to be published, Cham would reproduce it clean on wood and then pass it over to the engraver. Cham was a 19th-century French illustrator and cartoonist, who during his lifetime became one of the most popular French cartoonists. Cham’s cartoons satirized politics, social trends, travel, popular novels, and plays. In 1839, his work began to be published in newspapers like “Le Charivari”, a publication where he worked for thirty years. In his lifetime, Cham produced well over 10,000 drawings. He would become the first significant French comic artist, paving the way for many others. less DIMENSIONS 5.5ʺW × 0.01ʺD × 3.75ʺH STYLES FigurativeFrenchIllustration FRAME TYPE Unframed ART SUBJECTS Figure PERIOD Mid 19th Century ITEM TYPE Vintage, Antique or Pre-owned MATERIALS Drawing/Sketching MaterialsPaper CONDITION Good Condition, Original Condition Unaltered, Some Imperfections COLOR Tan TEAR SHEET CONDITION NOTES Excellent condition for the age of the drawing.
