Details Details Close Description Mahogany tambour desk with brass hardware and casters and inlay tapered legs. Made by Brandt Furniture Company, likely in the 50’s or 60’s. Unlike the rolltop desk, the tambour desk uses straight, perfectly vertical rows of shutters; these panels slide left and right, covering interior drawers and pigeonholes. The work surface sits atop one or two drawers, and folds back on itself when not in use (and is supported by wooden sliders when it is unfolded). Tambour desks are an American innovation associated with the father and son cabinetmaking team of John and Thomas Seymour. The Seymours emigrated from England in the 1780s, eventually settling in Boston. They are distinguished by reeded tambours, or panels, covering pigeonholes and drawers, much like later roll-top desks. Combining small size and delicate proportions, Tambour desks were intended for use by women, for correspondence and addressing invitations.
