Details Details Close Description 1988 “Red Barn, Englewood, NJ” Oil Pastel Drawing by John Elliot, Framed with COA from the artist’s estate. Charming impressionist Oil Pastel Painting on cream toned art paper and signed and dated by the artist lower left. Painting was created: en plein air in Englewood, New Jersey, Bergen County, USA. This small red barn had been located on the west side of Engle Street near Franklin Street Includes COA (certificate of authenticity) signed by the artist’s wife; also brief bio sheet as shown.. Image size is 17 1/2″ w x 11 3/4″ h frame size is 25 1/2″w x 19 1/2″ h x 1 ” deep – this lightly silver leafed wood frame has medium forest green mat. The artist was a key leader/teacher and presenter in the New York realists School in 2nd part of 20th Century and in international art publications. During his lifetime he was listed in Who’s Who in American Art and Who’s Who in the World among other references and books, magazines on art, including askArt. NOTE on the material oil pastel: John Elliot first used oil pastel while on movie sets in the 1960s. As a trained artist in painting academies in Europe, he would sketch the actors during the many “wait times” on the set. He discovered oil pastels from Picasso’s use of them which were then marketed as a superior hobby crayon type art material. They were NOT chalky and dusty and were relatively damage-proof as long as the supporting paper wasn’t damaged. He subsequently worked with art materials manufacturers to develop a professional quality oil pastel – non-toxic, color fast, consistent quality control sets of colors. A combination of pure ground pigment, a minute quantity of wax and mineral or other oil enabled not only direct use of the pastel sticks but also spreading the pigment with a solvent laden brush for wash and background effects. Like traditional oil paints, oil pastel could also support scratch-details. John Elliot is recognized as the pioneer in establishing oil pastel as a durable and innovation-supporting art material for Professional artists.
