Read biography below: Leopold was born in Dusseldorf and received his first training at Weimar from his father, the landscape painter Count Stanislaus von Kalckreuth (1820–1894), and subsequently studied at the academies of Weimar and Munich. Von Kalckreuth family: • Sister Countess Maria von Kalckreuth (1857-1897) was also a painter. • Sister Clara was a pianist who studied with Clara Schumann and with Franz Liszt. • Great-nephew, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906–1945), the German theologian & anti-Nazi martyr. Although he painted some portraits remarkable for their power of expression, he devoted himself principally to depicting with relentless realism the monotonous life of the fishing folk on the sea-coast, and of the peasants in the fields. His palette is joyless, and almost melancholy, and in his technique was strongly influenced by the impressionists. He was one of the founders of the secessionist movement. From 1885 to 1890 Leopold was professor at the Weimar art school. In 1890 he resigned his professorship and retired to his estate of Hockricht, in Silesia, where he occupied himself in painting subjects drawn from the life of the country-folk. In 1895 he became a professor at the art school at Karlsruhe. His work, Rainbow, hangs in Munich’s Alte Pinakothek and his Old Age hangs in Dresden’s Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister. Among his chief works are the Funeral at Dachau, Homewards, Wedding Procession in the Carpathian Mountains, The Gleamers, Before the Fish Auction, Summer and Going to School. He received the award and membership of the Order Pour le Mérite for Science and Arts in Bonn in 1926. He received the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art in 1927 and was a member of the Hamburg Artists’ Association until his death. Kalckreuth joins the list of artists who contributed to artistic dialogue in the 19th century on the move to modernity through their work in Germany. less DIMENSIONS 12ʺW × 2ʺD × 16ʺH STYLES ExpressionismFigurativeImpressionist ART SUBJECTS Portrait FRAME TYPE Framed PERIOD 1900 – 1909 COUNTRY OF ORIGIN Germany ITEM TYPE Vintage, Antique or Pre-owned MATERIALS Etching CONDITION Good Condition, Original Condition Unaltered, Some Imperfections COLOR Gray TEAR SHEET CONDITION NOTES • Extraordinarily thin paper; paper is in wonderful shape; • Behind glass and in a front access frame (inexpensive, but … more See less
