Details Details Close Description Jan Copperstone “Whispers” Hand Made Parchment Painting C.1970s Absolutely wonderful vintage original artwork by Jan Copperstone (American, b.1937) The fine detail and texture of this hand made artwork on parchment is outstanding. The entire piece is hand crafted with very steady and talented hands. Here we show the nest of a Robbin filled with four eggs. Added to the artwork is the leaf of a fern coming up from the ground, reaching for the nest. At the bottom of the fern leaf is the down feather of the mother bird. “Parchment is a processed animal membrane. The most common are sheep, calf (vellum), and goat skins; however,r parchment can be made from almost any mammal skin. The skins are soaked in water to clean; then placed in lime water to loosen hair and wash out fats and soluble proteins. The hair, fats, and surplus flesh is removed with a knife; the skins are washed again and scraped. It is then stretched and before it’s thoroughly dried it is rubbed with pumice to smooth a surface. Each piece of parchment will be unique, exhibiting its own character and it will give you lifetime of pleasure.” This piece of handmade parchment is titled “Whisper” Dimensions 4″ x 6″. The lovely silver leaf frame measures 10″ x 12″. Very good condition.
